Frequently Asked Questions

Autism is a lifelong condition that can not be outgrown; it is a lifelong difference in brain function, not an illness or disease. Signs of autism usually appear early in life, and each individual’s experience is unique. Additionally, autism can be inherited and passed down through generations. It is thought that as many as 1 in 100 people in the United Kingdom are autistic, with many more identifying as neurodiverse.

Autism is a lifelong identity that shapes how individuals engage and interpret the world around them. Whilst being autistic can present specific challenges to an individual, it does not reduce one’s ability to lead a fulfilling and meaningful life.

Many autistic adults may seek support from services or professions to help with particular tasks or require assistance in navigating social situations, much like individuals without autism. It is important to acknowledge and value the experiences and capabilities of those who are on the autism spectrum.

As with all individuals, a person on the autism spectrum possesses unique strengths and weaknesses but can also demonstrate a unique skill set and abilities. Just the same as neurotypical individuals, there are areas where autistic individuals may excel and areas where they may encounter difficulties. For more information on the challenges that neurodiverse individuals may face, please visit our challenges page.

Autism is different for everyone.

Autism is a spectrum, which means it encompasses a wide range of characteristics and challenges. Each person with autism is unique, with their own strengths and difficulties.

Some autistic people will need little or no support, whilst others may need help from a parent, carer or health professional during their life. No two people are the same, and needs can fluctuate daily.
